Commissioning A Portrait

I have been painting portraits for over 25 years. If you are considering commissioning a portrait, here's what you can expect:

COMMUNICATIONS
We will meet or communicate via phone, mail or email several times during the process. It's very important to understand your needs and create the work of art you expect and one that you will be proud to own. One of the first decisions you will make is the medium: oil, watercolor or graphite.

PROCESS
The best way to paint a portrait is to have the subject sit/pose for me several times and to take photos to work from between sittings. Sometimes long distances or time passed make this impossible. When this is the case, photos are used exclusively. From several photographs we will agree on one pose. During the painting process, you will receive several emails showing work in progress. I'll email a final image for your approval. After several weeks of drying (in the case of an oil painting), the finished art will be sent or delivered to you.

PRICING
Once I have your requirements (size, medium, pose) I will give you a quote for the finished work. Because of consultation time, preliminary sketches, travel, photography and the one-of-a-kind nature of a portrait, you can expect to pay more for a commissioned piece than art you see on this website. A 20% non-refundable payment is required prior to beginning the commission.
